The story is set after the death of King Aerys II "The Mad King" Targaryen. There was a rebellion where the Lord Paramounts of Westeros banded together to get the Mad King off the throne. When the forces of the rebellion reached the gate of King's Landing King Aerys II ordered the city burned to the ground with wildfire. The one King's Guard that was protecting him at the time took it upon himself to kill the The Mad King before he relayed the order to the maesters involved. When the forces broke through the gates of King's Landing they found that the soldiers had layed down their arms. Having learned of the death of the king they no longer felt the need to fight. When the leaders of the rebellion entered the Red Keep they found the king dead and that the Hand of the King was standing over the kings corpse. This man was Felix Aquila. He had served the king for many years. Keeping the 7 Kingdoms running as well as he could.
When the leaders of the rebellion decided that would sit down and decide who would become king several men instantly said that they had interest in being king. Then one of the Lord Paramounts suggested that they put Felix Aquila up as a temporary king atleast untill they could decide which one of them would rule. After several months there was a meeting at King's Landing where they would vote on who would be the new king. The 7 Lord Paramounts started by nominating who they though should be king. The first lord nominated Felix Aquila. All the men looked at each other and in silent agreement all decided that it would be him. The Lords had not deposed the Targaryen king for personal benefit, but for the benefit of the realm.
It has just been decided that Felix Aquila will be king. He has left his lands in The Reach to one of his lesser lords since he is now getting the High Lordship of King's Landing and will not have time to manage those lands. This is where our story starts...
